Railway tunnels pose a special challenge: dynamic alternating pressure loads of up to 10 kPa at several million load changes and static pressures of up to 30 kPa are maximally demanding for door and gate systems. Elkuch has mastered the technology that can ensure reliability and operational safety under these conditions over a service life of at least 20 years. The Gotthard Base Tunnel — the world's longest railway tunnel at 57 km — and the Loetschberg and Ceneri Base Tunnels are among the remarkable projects equipped with Elkuch safety gates, with more than 850 safety gates installed in major railway tunnel projects worldwide.

Since January 2020, Ludwig Elkuch AG merged its two company branches — Elkuch Bator and Elkuch Eisenring — in the field of tunnel doors for roads and railways, consolidating international operations for both rail and road tunnel door systems. Most recently, Elkuch was awarded the replacement of emergency doors in the Great Belt Tunnel (Storebælttunnelen) in Denmark — a 31 cross-passage project where the newly developed fire-resistant door leaf features a composite core with rock wool insulation reinforced with carbon fibre mesh, enabling a three-point suspension that prevents jamming or tension under fire conditions.
