Underground power stations — particularly pumped hydro and run-of-river hydroelectric facilities — involve large underground cavern structures with access tunnels, cable shafts, ventilation galleries and equipment access points. The doors and gates at these openings must manage blast and pressure differentials from turbine and generator operations, provide emergency escape route compliance, compartmentalise fire risks in facilities with significant electrical fire loads, and operate reliably under infrequent maintenance access conditions with very long service life expectations.
