Salco's patented inflatable sealing system is the original and definitive solution for CA/ULO storage. When the door closes, the rubber seal fills with air and is pressed firmly against the frame — including uneven surfaces — creating a 100% gas-tight seal. A built-in pressure gauge allows monitoring of seal integrity. For CA/ULO storage, even a small atmospheric leak negates the entire controlled-atmosphere investment.

Extends Fruit Shelf Life by Months

CA/ULO storage in a Salco gas-tight room creates an atmosphere with low oxygen content (as low as 1%), elevated CO2, and controlled temperature and humidity. This slows ripening and extends the storage life of apples, pears, citrus, berries, garlic, onions and many other products — in some cases by months compared to standard cold storage. The Salco gas-tight door is an industrial insulated door with a patented inflatable sealing system — the original and definitive access door for controlled-atmosphere (CA) and ultra-low oxygen (ULO) storage rooms where the integrity of a modified atmospheric environment is critical to the commercial value of the product stored. Salco pioneered gas-tight CA storage door technology in the early 1980s and holds multiple patents in the field. No other door in Hold Fast Industries’ range addresses this application.

Controlled atmosphere storage works by managing the oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene concentrations inside a sealed room — creating an atmosphere that slows respiration and ripening in fresh produce, extending storage life by months compared to conventional cold storage. The commercial value of a CA storage room is entirely dependent on the gas-tightness of the enclosure. A door that allows atmospheric leakage — even a small, undetectable leak — undermines the controlled atmosphere and the product value that depends on it. The Salco gas-tight door eliminates this risk.
